The aim of the BDT is to produce high quality work-ready graduates who have a sound understanding of the dynamic IT environment, both locally and internationally, that will enable them to be responsive and proactive to ongoing change in information and communication technologies in business. The BDT is an applied qualification that focuses on multiple aspects of the information systems cycle. This programme will equip students with the skills to analyse, design, develop, implement and maintain information systems across a variety of industries and business types.
Through a commitment to "hands on" learning, students will gain a strong grounding in the analytical, technical and theoretical concepts of computer based information systems. The BDT also emphasises the human and organisational aspects that relate to the use of such technologies including organisational management, project management and technical communication.
On gaining employment, it is expected that students will transition seamlessly and effectively into the workplace as a consequence of having spent time throughout their study in work based projects.
By covering interrelated topics, the BDT provides a practical link between the latest computer technologies and their applications to today's business environment ensuring that students are well equipped to take their places in this exciting and constantly changing IT industry.
Although the core focus of the BDT is digital technology, students may also choose a major in one of three areas namely Networking, Software and Web Development, or Data Analytics. Graduates of the BDT will be equipped with soft skills, a solid foundation of technical knowledge and practical skill, professionalism and knowledge of the place of IT in organisations.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of analytical, technical and theoretical concepts of Information Systems with an additional specialist understanding in at least one major area.
2. Use highly developed communication skills, to bridge the gap between tech savvy IT professionals and the often non-technical clients or end users.
3. Demonstrate understanding of the increasing dependency of all businesses on IT and show awareness of the impact of business constraints in developing IT solutions.
4. Supply and/or support IT strategic thinking for different local stakeholder groups, particularly Maori and Pasifika.
5. Demonstrate workplace professionalism and an understanding of businesses as commercial enterprises, including applying knowledge of contracts, legal and ethical issues.
6. Demonstrate business knowledge and skills particularly for those seeking employment in small businesses.
7. Demonstrate project management skills in designing, developing implementing, monitoring, evaluating and analysing projects.
8. Work effectively in teams demonstrating a team mind-set and cultural awareness and sensitivity.
9. Identify problems and generate solutions with the ability to advocate for the most appropriate solution.
10. Demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to information and communication technologies and the application in New Zealand Aotearoa.
In addition, the graduate profile of students who major in Networking will also be able to:
11. Use, install and administer at least two standalone operating systems that are in wide commercial use.
12. Use, install, troubleshoot and administer a server-based network infrastructure to meet organisational requirements.
13. Analyse the information security principles and implement security measures to meet business requirements.
14. To apply cloud computing concepts for business requirements and design and implement a resilient cloud computing infrastructure for an organisation.
In addition, the graduate profile of students who major in Software and Web Development will also be able to:
15 Demonstrate an understanding of software development principles and programming languages
16 Apply problem solving skills and design software algorithms
17 Analyse business processes and design software solutions to solve and improve them
18 Implement software solutions for at least two software platforms (such as web, mobile, desktop, and/or cloud, etc.)
19 Apply software engineering best practices to implement high quality software products
20 Adopt and apply new programming languages quickly
21 Use a wide range of software application development tools
22 Manage the development of software applications
23 Apply software verification and validation techniques to increase the quality of software products
In addition, the graduate profile of students who major in Data Analytics will also be able to:
24 Use both front-end and back-end data manipulation technologies
25 Analyse security, privacy and ethical issues of big data and data analytics
26 Review risks and opportunities of big data analytics in at least two disciplines
27 Adopt and apply big data analytics technologies
28 Produce decision support and business intelligence reports for complex scenarios
29 Apply decision modelling concepts in data analysis and exploring business intelligence
30 Design and develop multi-dimensional data warehouse from a range of internal and external databases
31 Apply statistical models for predictive analysis and forecasting in time series data
32 Visually analyse big data for exploring business intelligence and solving business problems
33 Design and develop big data and data analytic systems
34 Apply industry standard practices in data analytics and business intelligence
Prepares graduates to undertake post graduate study in the area of their specialisation.
Graduates will be prepared for employment in the field of information and communication technologies. Opportunities for employment depend on the Graduate Diploma studied, include programmer, database developer, network administrator, systems analyst, enterprise application developer website developer, software developer, network support specialist, ICT management and ICT project management, business and data analytics professional, Data Analytics professional, IT project manager (incorporating business analytics and intelligence).
